What is Sci-Fi Month?
Sci-Fi Month is a month-long blog event, that Rinn from Rinn Reads hosted for the first time last year, created to celebrate everything amazing about science fiction! From TV shows to movies, books to comics, and everything else in between, it is intended to help science fiction lovers share their love and passion for this genre and its many, many fandoms.
This year, we are combining forces with Rinn to make this Sci-Fi November bigger and better. Rinn is going to be quite busy this year so couldn’t quite do it all on her own, and we hope that by joining forces, we can work together to make this event just as much of a success as it was last year.
When is Sci-Fi Month?
Sci-Fi Month happens all November long, and takes place online – through each participant’s blog, Twitter feed, and other social media websites.
Who can participate?
Anyone! Bloggers, authors, readers, publishers – last year saw over fifty bloggers, twenty-five authors and three publishers taking part regularly, as well as plenty more commenting, Tweeting, discussing and sharing the love for sci-fi! Even if you’re not a blogger, you can take part just by reading, commenting, and Tweeting!
How do I sign up?
Through this sign up form. When you sign up, you will be assigned a contact person (who will email you) and you will also be added to our mailing list. This is so we can easily keep everyone taking part in the event easily updated. As with last year, there is no deadline for signing up – if you only learn about the event halfway through November, you’re more than welcome to join!
What kinds of things should I post for the event?
We encourage you to let your imagination run wild! If it involves science fiction, then post about it! Last year, there were all kinds of activity, including:
- quizzes and puzzles
- bingo cards
- top ten/favorite lists
- and more!
And it doesn’t have to be books. There were many posts on TV shows, films, video games and all different kinds of things last year. You can see what type of posts were done last year here or check out our reminder post which is full of post ideas and plans!
How do I add my posts to the schedule?
As with last year, we will be using a Google Docs spreadsheet – but this time, it will be embedded on our blogs, which means less updating for us! It does also mean that we ask that you follow our ‘guidelines’ when adding your post (just so it all looks neat)! Participants should receive the link to access the GoogleDoc spreadsheet in their ‘Welcome’ emails. If you’ve joined the event but have not received the link, please make sure to contact us.
Is there a deadline for adding to the schedule?
Not strictly as you can edit the schedule yourself, but it’s easier for us if we know what will be going up each day so we can promote it accordingly!
Is there a hashtag I should use to promote this event?
Yes! Please use the #RRSciFiMonth hashtag on Twitter, Tumblr, Facebook, and everywhere else! We also have an official twitter account (@SciFiMonth) which is being managed by the lovely Asti this year!
What happened to the Goodreads group?
During Sci-Fi November 2013, Rinn ran a Goodreads group specific to the event. While she had a lot of fun, it was decided that the group was not necessary this year. If you want to interact with other Sci-Fi November participants, you can do so either by visiting their blogs (check out the list of participants) or chatting to them on Twitter.
How do I get involved in the author/publisher interviews?
Last year, Rinn did a lot of intermediary work between authors and bloggers, but unfortunately none of us have the time this year. It is therefore up to you to contact authors or publishers if you wish. (Some bloggers and authors have volunteered their help for those who are interested in hosting a guest post or interview. If you want to get involved, please let us know and we will forward your contact details to those who can help.)
Can I do collaborations with other participants?
Yes! If you want to work with other Sci-Fi Month participants to do collaborations such as interviews, guest posts, etc., we say go for it! It’s a great way to make friends and share some sci-fi love. Check out the links to those participants who have signed up so far above and get in touch with other bloggers to see if they’re interested!
Does my blog have to be English to participate?
No! While a majority of participants are likely to have blogs written in English, this is not a requirement. If you want to join the event and promote Sci-Fi on your blog, do it!
Are there any official Sci-Fi Month graphics I can use on my blog?
Yes, and this year they’ve been created by the wonderful Kelley! Click here to see them on a separate page, as Kelley has gone to infinity and beyond by making a selection of sizes and styles!
Who can I contact if I have more questions?
When you sign up, you will be assigned a contact person (Rinn, Kelley, Leanne, or Asti). Please get in touch with her first, either via email or Twitter. If you don’t get a response from her within three days, you may try to contact another of us!
